Risperdal is yet another drug that has proven to have serious, adverse side effects, and another indication that a drug company places profits over safety.
Diabetes one of the properties of risperdal is that the medication can interfere with the way the body processes blood sugar.
J&J's CEO has placed high growth expectations on the pharmaceutical division. J&J's growth strategy in the pharmaceutical industry is driven by their strong operating cash flows. In 2002, J&J's had an operating cash flow of $8.2 billion, of which they used $500 million to acquire to new companies, $5 billion to repurchase outstanding shares and $1.7 billion for dividend payments. This strong cash position gives them the flexibility to pursue a variety of growth opportunities through licensing a promising drug, internal growth by funding R&D or making acquisitions. Since 1999, J&J's pharmaceutical companies have grown their R&D staff by more than 50% to 6, 700 employees. Furthermore, i 2002, approximately $4.0 billion, or 10.9%of n sales, was invested in research and development efforts. Growth Options: Make, Buy or License J&J has employed three vehicles, make, buy, and license to grow its product line. As shown in Exhibit 2, of the company's top six revenue-producing drugs two were developed by J&J scientists, two were obtained by acquisition, and 2 were licensed in from other firms. We performed a retrospective review of cardiovascular noninferiority trials published over the past 8 years in the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association to determine the degree to which these trials met the standards summarized in Table 1. We then compared the published conclusions of those trials based on our re-analysis employing these standards. In Table 2, we summarize the published results of these trials 1724 ; , one of which Stroke Prevention Using Oral Thrombin Inhibitor in Atrial Fibrillation V [SPORTIF V] ; 24 ; is quantitatively similar to our hypothetical trial. Statistical reasoning and clinical judgment were specified in the selection of the noninferiority margin in all but 2 trials, Superior Yield of the New strategy of Enoxaparin, Revascularization, and GlYcoprotein IIb IIIa inhibitors SYNERGY ; and SPORTIF V, in which the operative margins were chosen on the basis of expert consensus among members of the trial committees 23, 24 ; . Six of 8 trials reported a conclusion of noninferiority. Superior or acceptable safety and tolerability were reported in all but 3 trials, Continuous Infusion versus Double-Bolus Administration of Alteplase COBALT ; , SYNERGY, and SPORTIF V. In Table 3, we summarize the results of our re-analysis according to therapeutic noninferiority alone, therapeutic efficacy with respect to a putative placebo, and fractional preservation of standard treatment effect. Our noninferiority results correspond with the published conclusions in 5.

Nadia Garnefski & Vivian Kraaij Associate professor at Leiden University, Department of Clinical and Health Psychology Aim - The self-regulation of emotions through cognitions is inextricably associated with human life, especially after stressful events. Scarcely, however, studies have explicitly focused on the question to what extent specific cognitive emotion-regulation strategies mediate and or moderate between stress and health. The present study will focus on the relationship between stress, cognitive emotion-regulation and health problems in adolescents. More specifically, the direct, mediating and moderating effects of the following cognitive emotion-regulation strategies will be studied: self-blame, acceptance, rumination, positive refocusing, planning, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, catastrophizing and other-blame. Method - A total of 271 secondary school students varying in age from 12 to 18 years filled out a self-report questionnaire. Information was gathered among others on: negative life stress NLEC ; , cognitive emotion-regulation strategies CERQ ; , and physical and emotional health problems YSR ; . Direct, mediating and moderating effects of life stress and cognitive emotionregulation strategies on health problems will be tested by means of multiple regression analyses. Results Preliminary results show that the reporting of negative life stress is related to both physical and emotional health problems. In addition, it is shown that whereas cognitive strategies, such as self-blame and rumination are significantly associated with elevated levels of both physical and emotional health problems, other cognitive strategies, such as positive reappraisal, are associated with lower levels of health problems, instead. Moderating effects in the relationship between life stress and health were found for the strategies of selfblame, other-blame and positive reappraisal. No evidence for mediating effects was found. Conclusions and implications will be discussed.

Total of $150 million was spent on Texas foster children in fiscal 2004 for medication and medical costs. Outpatient costs accounted for $79 million and inpatient cost were $32.5 million. About one quarter of this cost $39 million ; was for medications and of that about 77 percent were for high cost psychotropic drugs. Of 436, 480 prescriptions written for Texas foster children in fiscal 2004, 60 percent or 260, 784 were for psychotropic drugs. Three psychotropic drug categories--antidepressants, antipsychotics and stimulants--were the ones most frequently prescribed, with antipsychotics being the most costly. In fiscal 2004, Texas Medicaid spent $14.9 million on antipsychotic drugs. This category includes Zyprexa, Seroquel and Risperdal, which typically cost an aver.

Ill an aspirin a day keep the doctor away? Definitely, maybe. That's the word from several new studies that show a daily dose of aspirin can reduce the risk of heart attack for some people. But don't rush to your medicine cabinet just yet. Experts say that aspirin lowers heart-attack risk by reducing the clotting factor in blood. That means that small clots in the heart can be dissolved before they become big clots-- and cause big heart attacks. The problem is that decreased blood clotting can raise the risk of other problems, including stroke. The best bet for now is to check with your doctor before you decide to put yourself on "aspirin therapy." Then, if your doctors approves, keep these points in mind: s Don't overdo it. Doubling the dose doesn't double the benefits. s Choosing coated, or "buffered, " aspirin brands will reduced the risks of stomach irritation and bleeding. s Aspirin can trigger serious problems and allergic reactions. And even though aspirin does improve heart-attack odds for most people, doctors warn that the drug is not a cure-all: It's not a substitute for a low-fat diet and regular exercise, or for giving up smoking. And no matter how many good things you hear about aspirin, those should stay the three main points in any heart disease prevention plan. 23, for example, rispetdal consta 50 mg.

What is Risperdal
The efficacy of fisperdal in delaying relapse was demonstrated in schizophrenic patients who had been clinically stable for at least 4 weeks before initiation of treatment with risperdal or an active comparator and who were then observed for relapse during a period of 1 to years see clinical pharmacology clinical trials.

L: \Departmental\RA\CONTROL Cimetidine and Ranitidine: Risperidone was administered as a single dose of 1 mg with multiple doses of either cimetidine 400 mg b.i.d. ; or ranitidine 150 mg b.i.d. ; in healthy young adult volunteers n 12 ; . The effect of the drug interaction of cimetidine and ranitidine on risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone combined was minimal. Clozapine: Chronic administration of clozapine with risperidone may decrease the clearance of risperidone. Topiramate: Healthy Volunteers: A drug-drug interaction study between risperidone and topiramate was conducted in 12 healthy volunteers 6 males, 6 females ; , ages 28-40 years, with single-dose administration of risperidone 2 mg ; and multiple doses of topiramate titrated up to 200 mg day ; . In the presence of topiramate, systemic exposure of risperidone and 9hydroxyrisperidone combined was reduced such that mean AUC0- was 11% lower and mean Cmax was statistically significantly 18% ; lower. In the presence of topiramate, systemic exposure of risperidone was statistically significantly reduced such that mean Cmax and AUC0- were 29% and 23% lower, respectively. The pharmacokinetics of 9-hydroxyrisperidone were unaffected. The effects of a single dose 2 mg day ; of risperidone on the pharmacokinetics of multiple doses of topiramate have not been studied. Patients with Bipolar Disorder: A drug-drug interaction study conducted in 52 patients with various types of bipolar disorder 24 males, 28 females ; , ages 19-56 years, evaluated the steadystate pharmacokinetics of risperidone and topiramate when administered concomitantly. Eligible subjects were stabilized on a risperidone dose of 1-6 mg day for 2 to 3 weeks. Topiramate was then titrated up to escalating doses of 100, 250 and 400 mg day along with risperidone for up to 6 weeks. Risperidone was then tapered and discontinued over 4 weeks while maintaining topiramate up to 400 mg day ; . There was a statistically significant reduction in risperidone systemic exposure 16% and 33% for AUC12 and 13% and 34% for Cmax at the 250 and 400 mg day doses, respectively ; . Minimal alterations were observed in the pharmacokinetics of risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone combined and of 9-hydroxyrisperidone. Topiramate systemic exposure was slightly reduced 12.5% for mean Cmax and 11% for mean AUC12 ; in the presence of risperidone, which achieved statistical significance. There were no clinically significant changes in the systemic exposure of risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone combined or of topiramate. The effects of higher doses of topiramate 400 mg day ; are unknown. Therefore, if combination therapy is chosen, patients receiving both risperidone and topiramate should be closely monitored. Effects of Risperidone on the Metabolism of Other Drugs Lithium: RISPERDAL 3 mg b.i.d. ; did not show an effect on the pharmacokinetics of lithium 400, 450 or 560 mg b.i.d. ; n 13 ; . Valproate: RISPERDAL 4 mg o.d. ; did not show an effect on the pharmacokinetics of valproate 1000 mg day ; n 9 ; . However, more subjects reported adverse events with the risperidone-valproate therapy compared to the placebo-valproate group in the clinical trial. Digoxin: The effect of RISPERDAL 0.5 mg day administered b.i.d. ; on the steady-state plasma concentrations of digoxin 0.125 mg day ; was examined in a double-blind, two-way, crossover trial in healthy elderly volunteers median age 68 years, range 61 to 75 years, n 19.
Everal years ago, Doug Dornan went to his psychiatrist with a list of 10 symptoms of hypomania that he had observed in his own behavior and asked for an increase in medication. The doctor refused. A few weeks later, Mr. Dornan was hospitalized with mania. He told his new doctor that he had responded well in the past to lithium or Depakote; the doctor prescribed Thorazine. Mr. Dornan refused. A month or so later when his insurance ran out, Mr. Dornan was converted from voluntary to involuntary status and transferred from a private hospital to a state psychiatric facility. The state hospital psychiatrist wanted to try him on Risperdal. Citing research evidence that he said showed Risperdak to be effective primarily for schizophrenia, not bipolar disorder, Mr. Dornan again requested lithium or Depakote. Once again, he said, the doctor refused to take his concerns seriously. A stand-off resulted: for three weeks, neither side would budge. Finally, Dornan's daughter and a close friend had reached their limit. "Take.
Risperdal treatment
Respectively. No accumulation of risperidone was observed during long-term use up to 12 months ; in patients treated every 2 weeks with 25 mg or 50 mg of RISPERDAL CONSTA. Special Populations and Conditions Pediatrics: No data available. Geriatrics: In an open-label trial, steady-state concentrations of risperidone plus 9-hydroxyrisperidone in otherwise healthy elderly patients years old ; treated with risperidone 65 powder for injectable prolonged-release suspension for up to 12 months fell within the range of values observed in otherwise healthy, nonelderly patients. For these reasons, dosing recommendations are the same for otherwise healthy, elderly patients and nonelderly patients see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION ; . Gender: No specific pharmacokinetic study was conducted to investigate gender effects, but a population pharmacokinetic analysis did not identify important differences in the disposition of risperidone due to gender with or without correction for body weight ; . Race: No specific pharmacokinetic study was conducted to investigate race effects, but a population pharmacokinetic analysis did not identify important differences in the disposition of risperidone due to race. Hepatic Insufficiency: Whereas the pharmacokinetics of oral risperidone in subjects with liver disease were comparable to those in young healthy subjects, the mean free fraction of risperidone in plasma was increased by about 35% because of the diminished concentration of both albumin and 1 acid glycoprotein. Although patients with hepatic impairment were not studied with risperidone powder for injectable prolonged-release suspension, it is recommended that patients with hepatic impairment be carefully titrated on oral risperidone before treatment with RISPERDAL CONSTA is initiated see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS - Hepatic Biliary Pancreatic and DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION ; . Renal Insufficiency: In patients with moderate to severe renal disease treated with oral risperidone, clearance of risperidone plus 9-hydroxyrisperidone was decreased by about 60%, Cmax and AUC of the active moiety were increased by about 40% and 160% respectively, half-life was prolonged by about 60% compared with young healthy subjects. Although patients with renal impairment were not studied with risperidone powder for injectable prolonged-release suspension, it is recommended that patients with renal impairment be carefully titrated on oral risperidone before treatment with RISPERDAL CONSTA is initiated see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS - Renal and DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION.
Demonstrated. See below for a more complete description of cholesterol-lowering medications. There are several "natural" cholesterol-lowering medications that according to published studies lower cholesterol. The ones I use most often are garlic, oat bran, vitamin C, and gugulipid. I no longer use vitamin E because studies show it increases heart disease and death.5 ; Because of the low cost, and minimal side effects I recommend these often. However, my experience has been that few patients attain a substantial reduction in cholesterol by this approach. Therefore, when I feel the indication to lower cholesterol is clear, I resort to prescription medications. More information on these "natural" cholesterol-lowering medications can be found in my September 2002 newsletter. ; I Do Prescribe Statins and I Hope I Guess Right As a medical doctor I obliged to offer every one of my patients the best care possible, based on the best evidence available. Unfortunately, most of that evidence on the efficacy of medications has been heavily tainted by pharmaceutical companies--so the truth is hard for me to know. Based on current published research, I try to do the best for my patients, but I reserve the right to change my opinion on any drug I use. I see many people with elevated cholesterol levels who also have a past history of heart disease--heart attacks, angioplasty and bypass surgery--and some with strokes. I usually offer these high risk patients the statins. But, I always qualify my prescription by telling them that I only guessing and hoping ; that I will be doing them more good than harm. My guess is educated because I have been practicing a descriptive word ; for about 40 years and I have read and understand most of the research on this subject. Thus, I would not make the offer if I did not believe it to be correct. I also make it clear that since I offering only my best guess, that the patient must be involved in the decision. Some people are very uncomfortable about having a high cholesterol level regardless of how much I try to reassure them that I believe they are in good health and at very low risk of a problem. Others fear the drugs, and would take almost any risk to avoid them. My decision to write a prescription weighs heavily on each person's feelings. When I believe the situation warrants aggressive treatment, one of my goals is to lower total cholesterol below 150 mg dL. The LDL-cholesterol should be below 80 mg dL. Possible Scenarios with Cholesterol above 200 mg dL A 60 year-old woman who is trim, exercises daily, does not smoke, and has no family history of heart disease no cholesterol-lowering medication. A 40 year-old man who suffered a heart attack last month yes, cholesterol-lowering medication. A 50 year-old overweight man with diabetes, no exercise and is unable to.
Experience in psychiatric settings, not one had ever encountered a case as outlined in the mailing. All received the mailing despite having never provided names addresses to the company voluntarily. It appeared that in 2005 a Janssen-Cilag representative has asked a secretary for all the names of the team members and this material was then put on a database. The complainant queried if this was ethical particularly given the disturbing nature of the mailing. The team had also been subjected to very heavy marketing of the injectable form of Risperdal Risperdal Consta ; throughout the autumn of 2005 when virtually on a weekly basis a representative would visit and distribute large amounts of office material ie diaries, wrist pads, paper shredders; some offices now resembled a Janssen-Cilag stock depot. When writing to Janssen-Cilag the Authority asked it to respond in relation to Clauses 9.2, 12.1 and 15.4 of the Code.
