Potent analgesic and its aqueous formulation may decrease injection site complications, We compared letorolac and diclofenac in a double-blind randomised trial. The study was approved by the local research ethics committee. ASA I or II females, who gave informed consent and had no contraindications to NSAIDS, received either ketorolac 30 mg or diclofenac 75 mg IM over the lateral aspect of the upper thigh 30-90 minutes before elective laparoscopic sterilisation. Anaesthesia consisted of propofol 2 mg -`, alfentanil 10 pg -`, atracurium 0.4 mg -`, nitrous oxide and isoflurane. Pain was assessed every 30 minutes in the recovery room and then at two and four hours in the ward using a verbal numeric score from 0 to 10. In the recovery room, pain was treated with a second dose of the study drug and then with pethidine if there was no relief after one hour. Metoclopramide was given for nausea and vomiting. In the ward, oral paracetamol 640 mg and dextropropoxyphene 65 mg were given if necessary. Results were compared with the MannWhitney U test and the Fisher's Exact test. There were 25 patients in each group. Five patients in the ketorolac group and six patients in the diclofenac groups required pethidine.
